Meanwhile, Neelix is becoming jealous of the time Kes is spending with Tom Paris. The Voyager encounters a swarm of space-dwelling lifeforms, which starts to pull the ship towards it. Triggered by the electrophoretic field of the lifeforms, Kes begins prematurely to undergo the Ocampan reproductive cycle, the elogium, which usually does not happen until after the age of four, but Kes is not yet two years old; the elogium happens only once, so if Kes will ever have a child, it has to be now. Neelix and Kes must decide whether they are ready to become parents. Ensign Samantha Wildman informs the captain that she is pregnant. Her husband is still at Deep Space Nine.
