Synopsis: A powerful, unknown alien force passes through Klingon space on a course directly for Earth, and the U.S.S. Enterprise -- which was recently refit with new equipment and engines -- is the only starship in interception range.

On Stardate 7410.2, Admiral James Kirk -- who has been Chief of Starfleet Operations for the past two and a half years, and hasn't logged a single star hour in that time -- takes over command of the Enterprise from Captain Will Decker in order to investigate the alien threat that is less than three days away from Earth.

Spock is on Vulcan undergoing the Kolinahr -- a ritual through which all emotion is renounced and shed -- but he is distracted by an alien consciousness that touches his human half. He takes a long-range shuttle to meet the Enterprise on its way to intercept the alien force, and Commander Spock is reinstated as science officer.

When the Enterprise reaches the alien intruder, it is pulled inside a huge alien ship at the center of a cloud larger than a star. An alien probe absorbs Lt. Ilia and assumes her form to communicate with the crew of the Enterprise. She tells the crew that the alien force is called V'ger, which seeks its creator.

Spock enters an inner chamber of the alien ship, and attempts to mind-meld with its consciousness. He learns that V'ger is a living machine that has absorbed the knowledge of many star systems, but has no feelings or emotions.

The Ilia probe takes the Enterprise officers into the core of the alien ship, where they find the old Earth probe Voyager 6 -- launched by NASA more than 300 years ago in the late Twentieth Century -- which had fallen into a black hole and emerged on the far side of the Galaxy near a machine planet. The machines rebuilt Voyager 6 to help it collect information and return it to its creator, and now it has arrived at Earth to accomplish its mission.

Captain Decker decides to physically join with V'ger, so that it may find its creator and ascend to the next level of knowledge beyond pure logic.
