Synopsis: The U.S.S. Enterprise meets with the science vessel S.S. Tsiolkovsky, which has been monitoring the collapse of a red super-giant star into a white dwarf. The Tsiolkovsky crew behaves as if intoxicated, and someone depressurizes the ship, killing the entire crew. An Enterprise away team investigates the science vessel, bringing back an unknown contagion.

After the away team finds a fully clothed member of the Tsiolkovsky crew in a shower, Commander Riker is reminded of a similar incident a century ago aboard the Constitution-class U.S.S. Enterprise while that ship was monitoring a planet breaking up with similar shifts of gravity; complex strings of water molecules infected the crew and combined with carbon to intoxicate the crew.

While intoxicated, Lt. Yar initiates a sexual encounter with Lt. Commander Data, an android who is fully functional.

Based on records from the original U.S.S. Enterprise, Dr. Crusher develops an antidote to the crew's intoxication in time for the Enterprise to escape the collapsing star.
