Voyager is transported to the Delta Quadrant by a powerful entity called the Caretaker, who is trying to save the Ocampa colony on a nearby planet before he dies. After the Caretaker dies, the Voyager's Captain Janeway destroys the Caretaker's space station so the hostile Kazon cannot steal its advanced technology, thus trapping the Voyager and Maquis crews 70,000 light-years from Earth; the Maquis crew joins the Voyager crew to make the long trip home after the Maquis ship is destroyed. A Talaxian trader named Neelix and his Ocampan lover, Kes, also join the crew, and Neelix parks his ship in the Voyager's shuttle bay.
