The crew learns that the nebula is a life form, and returns to repair the damage it did before. The incident depletes the ship's energy reserves by over 20 percent. Tom Paris creates holodeck program Paris Three, a simulation of a French bistro, which he frequented while in his second year at the Academy at the Starfleet base outside Marseilles. Characters in the program include the owner Sandrine, legendary pool player Gaunt Gary, and a half-Daliwakan gigolo.
