Synopsis: Admiral Forrest orders the Enterprise to investigate a volcanically active planet 30 light-years behind it. Ensign Travis Mayweather takes a leave and visits his family's 50-year-old J-Class freighter, the E.C.S. Horizon, which is close to the Enterprise's present course.

While the Enterprise studies volcanoes on the planet, the crew enjoys nightly horror movies including "Frankenstein," "Bride of Frankenstein," and "Son of Frankenstein."

Ensign Mayweather, who hasn't seen his family in four years, learns that his father has died and his brother, Paul, is now the captain of their family cargo ship, though he has little command experience. The Horizon is attacked by alien fighters, which attach a subspace beacon with a di-cobalt explosive. The Constellation was also attacked eight weeks ago by a ship that planted a beacon on its hull, and an alien cruiser appeared the next day and stole the Constellation's cargo. The alien cruiser has engines similar to a Mazarite ship, and Ensign Mayweather makes some modifications to the Horizon's weapons to fight off the aliens.

  • Factoid: The E.C.S. Horizon is heading to Deneva Station to drop off cargo. The ship is also delivering stromatopod larvae to the Demerians, and missed a rendezvous with an Orion freighter two weeks ago.

  • Factoid: The Echo Three subspace relay is within range of the Enterprise.

  • Factoid: The Enterprise has gone 150 light-years and seen 22 inhabited worlds in 18 months.

  • Factoid: According to Dr. Phlox, Dr. Frankenstein's technique is similar to a practice on B'Saari Two, where an isolytic current is used to re-animate the bodies of the recently deceased. The revived individuals weren't capable of more than basic cellular metabolism, but the B'Saari have developed a procedure that shows promise in repairing synaptic damage.

  • Factoid: The closest Vulcan analog to a horror movie is a discipline known as tarul-etek, which uses disturbing imagery to provoke an emotional response.

  • Factoid: Trelkis Three is a planet with multi-centric rings.
