Synopsis: Commander Tucker has an idea to compress the engine's antimatter stream before it reaches the injectors in order to stabilize the warp field and increase the ship's cruising velocity to warp 5.0. While Tucker is testing the warp engine, the Enterprise enters a polaric field about 11,000 kilometers in diameter, and nucleonic particles flood the manifolds, causing an injector flare. Tucker is caught in an explosion, leaving him comatose with extensive neural damage.

Dr. Phlox suggests implanting Tucker's DNA into a Lyssarian Desert Larva in order to create a fast-growing simbiot clone, from which neural tissue can be transplanted into Tucker to treat his brain injury.

Dr. Phlox names the simbiot "Sim." The simbiot grows quickly, and gains Tucker's genetic memories and personality as he ages.

Particulates are accumulating on the Enterprise hull, creating a dia-magnetic field that will eventually disable all ship systems in four days. Sim has an idea to use the shuttlepods to tow the disabled Enterprise, which creates enough momentum for the ship to clear the particle field.

Sim tells Subcommander T'Pol that Tucker had romantic feelings for her and enjoyed their Vulcan neuropressure sessions together. Captain Archer convinces Sim that he must sacrifice his life in order to save the original Commander Tucker. After the operation is successful and Tucker is saved, Sim's body is ejected into space, and the Enterprise continues its mission.
