Synopsis: Minister Nathan Samuels of the United Earth government wants the Enterprise to destroy John Frederick Paxton's Orpheus mining facility, which has tapped in to the powerful verteron array on Mars. Paxton is threatening to use the weapon unless all aliens leave the Solar system in 24 hours.

Captain Archer says that Paxton is holding Commander Tucker and Commander T'Pol hostage, and destroying the facility could kill thousands of people in the nearby Utopia Colony. With information from Harris, Lt. Reed's former contact in Covert Operations, the Enterprise crew plans to send a team to Mars and approach the verteron array at a low altitude undetected.

Commander T'Pol learns that Paxton, the leader of the Terra Prime isolationists, suffers from Taggart's Syndrome, whose only treatment is Rigelian gene therapy.

Under the cover of a comet, Captain Archer leads a team to infiltrate Paxton's facility as Paxton prepares to fire the weapon at Earth. Paxton is captured, and the weapon fires harmlessly into the ocean near San Francisco. Minister Samuels and Captain Archer convince the alien delegates to continue negotiations to form a coalition of planets.

The Enterprise crew recovers the Vulcan-human hybrid child that Paxton created from Tucker and T'Pol's genetic material, but Dr. Phlox determines that its cloned DNA is unstable and the child will not live long. Asside from the flawed cloning technique, Phlox says that there is no reason that Vulcans and humans cannot have healthy children in the future.
