Synopsis: Dr. Phlox is corresponding with his colleague in the Interspecies Medical Exchange, Dr. Jeremy Lucas, the first human to serve on Denobula.

The Enterprise encounters a pre-warp planet whose dominant humanoid species, the Valakians, is suffering from a deadly epidemic, but a less-advanced humanoid race on the planet, the Menk, is not suffering from the illness.

The Valakians have sent space ships out to find more-advanced races that might be able to cure their disease.

Dr. Phlox discovers that the Valakians' illness is at the genetic level -- the race is becoming extinct, and the Menk may be evolving to replace them. Captain Archer must decide whether to interfere with the planet's natural evolution by giving the Valakians a cure to their genetic disorder, and whether to give them advanced warp technology that would allow them to seek a cure elsewhere in the Galaxy.

Meanwhile, Dr. Phlox is teaching Ensign Sato to speak Denobulan, and he thinks Crewman Cutler is interested in a romantic relationship with him.

Factoid: The M'klexa and Ferengi are two warp-capable species that have visited Valakis. T'Pol has never heard of these races.

Factoid: The pheromones of human females aren't as potent as Denobulans'.
