Synopsis: The Enterprise detects a possible dark matter nebula. Captain Archer and Subcommander T'Pol take a shuttlepod into the phenomenon to bombard it with metrion particles to excite any dark matter.

Admiral Forrest contacts Captain Archer and informs him that Captain A. G. Robinson has died while climbing Mount McKinley. Robinson had been Archer's rival while they were in the NX-Test Program trying to break the Warp 2 barrier, along with Gardener and Duvall. Under Commodore Forrest, Commander Archer and Commander Robinson were preparing for the first test flight of the NX-Alpha, and Forrest chose Robinson as the pilot. The NX-Alpha was destroyed during the test flight, and the Vulcan Advisory Council recommended the NX-Test Program should be suspended indefinitely.

A young officer on Captain Jefferies' Engineering Team, Lt. Charles Tucker, III -- nicknamed "Trip," short for Triple -- helped Archer and Robinson take the NX-Beta on a test flight without permission, and they proved that the engine design -- created by Archer's father -- was sound. Archer and Robinson were grounded for three months, and the Vulcan Advisory Council ordered further simulations for over a year before they admitted the engine would work. Eight months after that, Duvall broke the Warp 3 barrier in the NX-Delta. Five years later, they laid the keel for the Enterprise, and Archer was eventually selected as the captain of the NX-01.
