Synopsis: In 2121, Henry Archer, a young associate of warp drive inventor Zefram Cochrane, is working on a new starship engine, but his work is impeded by the lack of information being shared by Vulcan Ambassador Soval and his people.

Thirty years later, Henry's son, Jonathan Archer, is a captain in Earth's Starfleet, and he is overseeing the final preparations to launch Earth's first Warp 5 capable starship, the Enterprise. Meanwhile, Klaang, a Klingon courier carrying information about a Suliban conspiracy, is attacked by genetically enhanced Suliban soldiers and crash lands on a farm in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Captain Archer convinces Admiral Forrest to let the Enterprise launch early and return the injured Klaang to Qo'noS, over the objections of Vulcan Ambassador Soval.

En route to Qo'noS, Suliban soldiers invade the Enterprise and abduct Klaang. To look for clues, the Enterprise goes to Rigel Ten, Klaang's last stop before crashing on Earth. There Archer meets a genetically enhanced female Suliban named Sarin, who informs him that she gave Klaang information that the Suliban Cabal, on orders of operatives from the future, is trying to destabilize the Klingon Empire as part of a Temporal Cold War. Members of the Cabal attack them and kill Sarin, but the Enterprise manages to follow the Suliban ship back to the Cabal's base in the atmosphere of a gas giant planet.

Inside the base, Archer and Commander Tucker find Klaang and return him to the Enterprise. Archer also meets Silik, the leader of the Cabal, inside a chamber where Silik gets orders from the future.

After returning Klaang to Qo'noS, where the Klingon Chancellor recovers Sarin's data encoded in Klaang's DNA, Archer receives orders from Starfleet to continue his mission to explore deep space, and Vulcan Subcommander T'Pol decides to remain aboard as science officer of the Enterprise.
